Nearby archeological walk surprise

Surely you have admired it as it stands majestically on the rock starting your excursions around the Peloponnese, but how many have visited it? The castle of Acrokorinthos, together with the archeological site of Ancient Corinth at its foot, is a nice idea for an easy and low budget walk from Athens, while if you read us from Northern Greece and go down for a vacation to Peloponnese it is worth putting in your schedule.

A friend came up with the idea for a day with the children in Acrocorinth, driven by the interest of our four-year-old boys in castles, which is usually satisfied through books about knights and Playmobil. It did not take any preparation (not even to fill the tank with gasoline since it is only about 80 km) but only to set the alarm at 9.30 to save the sun and put the children in the mood by browsing pictures and historical information on the page of the Ministry of Culture. In a short time we were on our way talking about Byzantines, Franks and Ottomans with the plastic pirate sword from Halloween in hand. The route is very easy and there is sufficient signage – as long as you reach the height of Corinth to continue to Tripoli at a point where there is no sign. First you meet Ancient Corinth, an unexpectedly beautiful and well-preserved archeological site that we badly left for after the castle and caught it open for just 10 minutes (closes at 3 on Sundays). It is worth touring around the Doric temple of Apollo that dominates the center and look for traces of the Roman market, baths and galleries and of course admire the findings of the excavations in the museum (mosaics, ceramics, etc.). More about the archeological site here, the ticket costs € 6.

A little higher by car, the castle of Acrokorinthos makes its appearance imposing. The uphill cobbled street that takes you to the successive gates requires non-slip shoes, water and a hat – while as we found out a little later, relaxing under the trees on the plateau with the Byzantine tank overlooking the sea, it would not hurt to we also had supplies for a casual picnic. Admission costs € 2 according to the site, although when we visited it we were not asked for a ticket, while the castle at this time stays open until 7 in the afternoon. A typical example of fortress architecture, with its first fortification dating to the end of the 7th-6th c. e.g. and the surviving walls around the Venetian occupation, the Castle of Acrokorinthos hides inside a large area that you can appetite can give you several hours of exploration looking for ruins of temples, minarets, fountains, etc. The scenery was idyllic both in view and in peace, since apart from the rustling of the air that made us glove in terms of temperature and the voices of the children who were experimenting with the echo, we heard only a few strangers and the music of a group that made a fuss in the ruins!

Going down, he had lunch for good and the ideas for food in Loutraki or Epidavros were replaced with a nice meal on the roof of the family barbecue “Gemelos” which “flies” over the archeological site of Ancient Corinth. Despite the tourist setting (which unfortunately applies to the whole image of the area, with the classic rough constructions, where we saw up to… Mykonian windmill) and the photos of the menus at the entrance, the meat of the hour and the oil were decent, the potatoes handmade, the beers came in an iced glass, the service friendly and fast and the prices around € 10-12 per person.

Of course, if you have picnic supplies with you and more endurance from us, you can easily combine the archeological walk we described with a swim in Loutraki or the surrounding area. We ended up in the old-fashioned playground under the pine trees for relaxation or relaxation on the benches according to the needs of each member of the group and in an orchard and something we were home full of pictures, postcards (and yet there are still!) With archeological findings that impressed to the children (“my jug is older than the mosaic of Isidore, it is 2,500 BC!”) and future plans. So when will we go to Ancient Nemea?

Short summer getaways can continue on beautiful day trips. For those who live in Attica, a good suggestion is Corinth. So close – about an hour from Athens – that you do not understand when you arrived! You only understand it from the beauty of the landscape, as the blue of the sea and the green of the olive and the pine, follow the urban landscape of Attica!

In Assos and Lechaio you enjoy the Corinthian. In Kechries, Korfos and the baths of Oraia Eleni (photo above) you enjoy the peaceful coves of the Saronic Gulf and you drown in the pine forests.

The Isthmus

It is this narrow piece of land that connects Central Greece with the Peloponnese, has been, since antiquity, a major issue for the inhabitants of Corinth, since it separated the Saronic Gulf from the Corinthian Gulf – and consequently the Aegean from the Ionian Sea – and made the transition from one sea to another dangerous, tedious and time consuming. The Corinth Canal which connects the Saronic Gulf with the Corinthian Gulf, at the site of the Isthmus of Corinth. A little east of the city of Corinth will be the first stop of your trip! (photo above: Acrokorinthos)

Ancient Corinth

The village is located 8 km southwest of Corinth. You can visit the Archaic temple of Apollo, the Pyrenean fountain with its six openings (places that look like caves). The Glafki fountain, carved into a rock, is also interesting. You will also see the Conservatory, Acrokorinthos, the castle of Corinth.

Sofiko and Korfos

Unique places, unique colors, with a unique pine forest of 80,000 acres, one of the few in Greece. Very picturesque place, a wonderful village, you think you are on an island! You will love Sofiko! (photo above)

Korfos (photo above) is a tourist destination, a picturesque village, with several rentals and shops for food and drink. Excellent beaches with trees here to reach the sea!

Despite the recent development with hotels and holiday homes, they remain quiet destinations for those who know how to enjoy nature and enjoy simple but special things! Next to the village is the bay of Selonda, where the submarine “Papanikolis” was hidden.

Small Anvil

Wonderful beach, 20 km from the city of Corinth, in the Municipality of Soligeia , on the road to Epidavros. You will enjoy a swim on a pebble beach and lots of greenery!

The pines on the beach of Amoni and Kalogerolimanos (photo above) reach the sea, literally in the sand!

Epidaurus

Very close to Sofiko, is Epidaurus . The route is just as wonderful! Dense vegetation will relax your eyes as you travel a distance of about 30 km to visit the ancient theater, famous for the performances it hosts every summer.

Have fun!

A short distance from Athens and the capital of Corinth is Soligeia, one of the most beautiful areas of the prefecture and the Peloponnese.

The Kapodistrian municipality of Soligeia (01-01-1999) includes the villages of Sofiko (2100 inhabitants), Angelokastro (300 inhabitants), Korfos (300 inhabitants).

It presents a great diversity of nature, since the Saronic Gulf forms deep blue and lacy beaches, many of which are suitable for swimming.

It is green especially with pines, several olive trees, vineyards and tobacco fields (Angelokastro).

The area has developed livestock, while olive oil and honey of excellent quality are produced.

In ancient times the name Soligeia had an area on the so-called Soligeio hill, near the present village of Galataki at a distance of 11 km from Sofiko. According to tradition, the name was derived from the composition of the words Solos, health. The great Athenian sage and legislator, at some point in his life, when he was ill, settled there and the good climate and the waters of the area helped to restore his health. It is mentioned for the first time in the history of Thucydides during the narration of events of the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), during which one of the fiercest battles took place in the region in September 425 BC. between the Athenians under General Nikias and the Corinthians under Vattos, who finally managed to repel them. During the second descent of the Dorians around 1104 BC, a stronghold was built by them on Soligeio hill, from where they started many excursions until they managed to occupy Ancient Corinth from the Aeolians, to overthrow the Sisyphus dynasty and to establish the hegemony of their leader Alitis. Soligeia as well as Corinth suffered complete destruction after the domination of Roman troops in 146 BC. by Lefkios Mommios.

Nikolaos Verdelis made important excavations in the area in 1957. He discovered the ruins of a temple that was probably built in 800 BC. and is said to have been dedicated to Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Near the temple was discovered a cemetery of chambered tombs of the Mycenaean period (1450-1400 BC), the remains of which are still visible today near the church of Prophet Elias. In the vicinity of these tombs were found ceramic vessels, navel bottles, compasses, figurines. Some of them are now on display at the Museum of Ancient Corinth.

During the years after the liberation with the B.D. 3-4-1833 the Municipalities of Soligeia were formed (1529 inhabitants) with headquarters in Sofiko (first Mayor of A. Nordas) which included Korfos and Yrnithi (194 inhabitants) with headquarters in Angelokastro (first Mayor Vassilios Irini). Later with .Δ. 27-11-1840 the Municipalities of Yrnithi, Rytos and part of the Municipality of Apia were merged in the Municipality of Soligeia.

The Municipality of Soligeia with the B.D.31-08-1912 was abolished and divided into Communities and Settlements.

It was reconstructed on 1-1-1999 (Kapodistrias Law) and included Sofiko (headquarters), Korfo and Angelokastro.

With the Law of Kallikrates from 01-01-2011, this Municipality was merged in Corinth.

The villages of Soligeia have an important history and many attractions.

Sofiko (410 m. Altitude)

Located on the hill of Tzalikas (780 m. Altitude)

There are testimonies that in its place during the classical era there was the settlement of Pigi, which was preserved until the 10th century AD. It was rebuilt in the 14th AD. century.

The Sofikite lieutenant-general Ioannis Hatzis Mertzellos (1791-1860), who prepared the revolution in Sofikos, has a great role in the Greek Revolution, since all the chiefs who took part in the siege of Acrocorinth (01-04) were sworn in. On 30-03-1821 the Bishop of Damalon, Jonas, arrives here and together with Mertzelos, they proclaim the Revolution in Corinth. By decision of the Executive Body on 14-07-1823, it becomes the seat of the Revolutionary Government that remained until 16-08-1823 when it was transferred to Salamina. In the summer of 1826 it becomes a theater of civil battles of the Notaries (Ioannis vs. Panagiotis).

During the Greek-Italian War, the action of the distinguished Sophistic Captain Miltiadis Iatridis (1906-1960) is great. As captain of the submarine “Papanikolis” he acted especially in the Adriatic and managed to sink 3 Italian barges in the Straits of Otranto. saboteurs, causing damage to the Axis ships. With the end of the war (1941) he led his submarine to the Middle East.

Inside the village there are many houses of traditional architecture, while throughout the area it is worth visiting the historic church of Agios Georgios. It is a stone-built, historic church, dating from 1700 in the style of a single-aisled cruciform basilica with a dome. It has important murals and was restored in 2016 with an EU program.
Right next to it, Agios Charalambos was built at the beginning of the 19th century.

At the eastern end there is a church dedicated to Agios Nikolaos, Demetrios. It was built in 1780 in the style of an arched basilica with frescoes inspired by the daily life of the Sophics of the 18th century.

Annunciation of the Virgin
It was built in the center of the village (Kokkinia district) in 1842. It is made of stone of royal style, single-aisled. The iconostasis dates from 1847. There is a hagiography of Agios Eleftherios, work of the Cretan Nikolaos Vasilakis. It has been renovated in 2001.

Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin – Hodegetria 320 (m. Altitude)
It is located at a distance of 3 km from the village, very close to E.O. Isthmia – Epidaurus.
The professor of Byzantine Archeology Anastasios Orlandos, who visited the area in 1933, considers that the current katholikon of the Monastery was built in the 12th century and that it was built on a pre-existing early Christian church. For its construction, materials from a large ancient Greek temple of Aphrodite were used, some of which we see today scattered in the courtyard of the Monastery.

It is a Byzantine cross-roof with a dome.

The frescoes date from the 12th century to 1558. The iconostasis was made in 1801. An important heirloom is the Holy Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Hodegetria.
At a distance of 150m is the Church of Agia Paraskevi, dating from 1617, belonging to the Cemetery of the Monastery, with a iconostasis painted in 1737, while important is a mural depicting the dance of the young.

Temple of Taxiarches
It is located 4 km from the village in Larissi.
It dates from the end of the 12th century in the style of a Byzantine cross-roof with a dome.
Nearby is the Church of the Holy Trinity, early 13th century, Byzantine cross-roof with great archeological frescoes.

On the shores of Sofiko there are beautiful coves such as Amonios Kalogerolimano, Frangolimano overgrown with pines and beaches suitable for swimming.

A real jewel for Sofiko is the ranch at Laka Bekatun (600m. Altitude) on Tzalika hill at a distance of 700m. from the village. There is a children’s camp with a theme park, while there are many events.

Several taverns offer fine specialties. The archeological rhythm theater organizes many cultural events, especially the summer, theatrical music, dance.

Unique in Corinth is the custom of Yem on the three days of Easter with dances and songs.

Korfos, the Riviera of Soligeia

We take the road east of Sofikos and through a dreamy route of 8 km, where the pine dominates, we end up in this beautiful seaside village at the mouth of the bay.

The environment and the climate are wonderful, the shores are ideal for swimming, while in the numerous fish taverns one can taste the local seafood specialties.

An uphill but good road at a distance of 4 km north of the village, leads to the historic chapel of Panagia tou Steririou in the homonymous location.

It was built in the second half of the 11th century. He is associated with Saint Luke Steritis, founder of a monastery in Boeotia who stayed in Corinth during the years 918-928 and practiced here.

It is a type of cruciform dome. The Byzantine sculptural decoration is limited to the marble iconostasis. On the floor of the sanctuary, a large part of it is preserved from colorful pieces of marble with which it was once completely paved.

Remarkable murals of 1668 are the work of the great Nafplio hieromonk, hagiographer Theodoulos Kakava.

In the surrounding area, medieval building remains can be seen that show that the Temple was a catholic monastery. The two-storey Byzantine building north of the Temple is the best preserved.
At a distance of 1.5 west of the area there is the chapel of Agia Anna. It was built in 1774 and was the katholikon of the Monastery, the other buildings of which, as monks’ cells, are now in ruins.

At a distance of 3.5 km east, the road leads to Kalamiano, where in 2001 the ruins of a residential complex, a remarkable port in the Mycenaean period, were found. The locals call it “the port of Agamemnon”.

It is believed that it flourished in the 13th century BC.

Further south, a road leads to the bay of Selontas with a sandy beach, which served as a refuge for “Papanikolis” against World War II.

In Korfos there are many hotels, rooms for rent, while many holiday homes of Greeks and foreigners have been built.

Angelokastro

Picturesque mountain village on the hill of Poulageza, at an altitude of 740m. It is 8 km from Sofiko. In the ancient Greek period in its area it is speculated that there was the settlement of Yrnithio.

It flourished during the Byzantine years. It took its name, probably from the “castle of ads” that exists in the village and from which they were transported by torch messages to other areas. It was built in the 12th century by the Byzantine emperor Angelos Komnenos. Today it occupies an area of 4 acres. It consists of a citadel with a tower – observatory and a courtyard of towers and huts, while outside the courtyard there are ruins of Roman houses.

During the Revolution of the 21st century, the action of the Angelokastriti thousandaire Vassilios Irini, later Mayor, who fought under the Nikitaras, Gennaios Kolokotronis with great participation in the battle of Dervenaki (26-07-1822) was great.
At a distance of 2 km south of the village at Patima, the road that continues to Arachneo, leads us to the ruins of an ancient building that legend considers to have been the palace of Princess Yrnithos.

In an area inside the new church of Agios Dimitrios (1997), there is an Ecclesiastical-Folklore Museum, with valuable objects, including wall-mounted frescoes of the Church of Agios Nikolaos.

Next door is the old church that was renamed in honor of Agios Ioannis Prodromos. It dates from the middle of the 19th century, a stone basilica with an elevated square vaulted dome.

In the center of the village there is the oldest church of Agios Nikolaos, dating from the 10th century, declared a protected area.

It is a stone-built tiled roof in the style of a single-aisled basilica with magnificent Byzantine art frescoes.

In this Temple were found, among others, and transferred to the local Museum:
Gospel published by Venice 1761
– 12 Gospels published by Venice 1876
-expert of publication 1631

There is a tavern that offers delicious local livestock products.

Very close to Sofiko (12 km) within the Prefecture of Argolida on the National Road is the historic Monastery of Panagia Agnouta.

The area can be a base for excursions to many interesting neighboring locations such as Epidaurus, Nafplio, Mycenae, Arch. Corinth, Loutraki.

Come to the beautiful Soligeia. You will be impressed by the green landscape, the deep blue beaches, the monuments, the hospitality of the inhabitants!

Route through time in the area of Ancient Tenea and Kiliomodi

Legend has it that the Teneates were descendants of the captives of Troy, whom Agamemnon, through Tenedos, settled in the area.

Over time, the myth of the lost city covered the area with a veil of mystery and many travelers and contemporaries searched for Ancient Tenea . The only find from the land of Teneatida was the “Kouros of Tenea”, a work of the 6th c. BC, which was found in 1846 in Athikia, Corinth. It represents a young man with a naked, athletic body and has the primordial form of the god Apollo.

The discovery of an archaic sarcophagus in 1984 during the work of the Community of Chiliomodi and the finding, in the area between Chiliomodi-Klenia in 2010, of the Twin Kouros, impressive tomb statues of the Archaic period, products of antiquity, was the reason for the systematic archaeologist Dr. Elena Korka , Honorary General Director of Antiquities & amp; Of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture.

The excavation takes place in September and October each year since 2013 and continues to this day. With the participation of a multidisciplinary interdisciplinary team, archaeologists and students from Greek and foreign Universities, the Tenea Project team supports with hard work this important excavation effort to find and highlight Ancient Tenea. During the seven years of the excavation activity, an organized cemetery was located (6th century BC – 3rd century BC), section of an ancient road, a two-room above-ground burial monument of the 1st c. A.D. The first residential Roman remains of the city of Ancient Tenea were found at the Old School site, while in 2019 the first public building, the Baths, came to light. The discovery of Ancient Tenea was considered one of the most important archaeological achievements in 2018 and attracted the interest of the whole world. Very important findings have been found in the seven-year excavation, which are studied by scientists and reveal a rich society, with the character of interculturalism, which is in an important position that made it a passage in all Hellenistic and Roman times. They also show that the area has been continuously inhabited for 1000 years at least since the 6th c. e.g. until the 6th c. A.D. and, as it seems, is abandoned by the invasions of the Avaroslavs.

The remaining people now move to the mountainous area and in the following centuries the solitary life flourishes and the monasteries play not only a religious role, but also a political and economic role, especially during the Venetian and Turkish rule. In the place where Ancient Tenea was located, which coincides in part with today’s Kiliomodi, there was no habitation due to its dangerous location, because it is located at the Corinth-Argos crossing.

In the area, however, there is a great and very rich monastery, the Holy Monastery of Faneromeni (Old Monastery), located seven kilometers southeast of the current village and its presence was intertwined with the life of the inhabitants of the area and there was a strong spiritual connection. The rich plain of the area was the property of the monastery and before the revolution some families lived there renting or taking care of the land of the monastery.

The Catholic of the Old Monastery of Faneromeni of the 12th c. A.D. and the church of Agia Marina of the 16th c. AD, which has been hagiographed by the painter of the time Dimitrios Kakava, since 1951 historical monuments have been defined. The monastery was male until 1949 when it was converted into a convent, while in 1897 it was moved to its current location, three kilometers east of the village, next to the forest.

With the establishment of the Greek state, there was a great movement of the inhabitants from Chiliomodi and in 1843 311 inhabitants were registered. The rural-livestock settlement is slowly changing into a place with a petty bourgeois character, in part, as the new societies of the free Greek state were now being formed, when their position was relevant.

And the position of Kiliomodi was very topical. It is located just 18 km from Corinth, 98 km from Athens, 33 km from Argos and 43 km from Nafplio. Great archeological sites are very close, the archeological site of Ancient Corinth at 13 km, Ancient Nemea at 17 km and Mycenae at 23 km. It is located at the Corinth-Argos pass, in a nice location, with olive groves & amp; plain all around and next to a beautiful forest. Its location enabled it to develop, acquire a railway station and have easy movement with a good road network.

It is the central village of an area with beautiful and picturesque villages, with rich heritage Klenia, Agonori, Stefani, Agios Vassilios, Koutalas, Mapsos, Spathovouni.

Travel to today’s Kiliomodi

It is a village of the Municipality of Corinth, 18 km south of Corinth and on the Corinth-Argos road. It has about 2000 inhabitants, most of whom are engaged in agriculture, viticulture, poultry farming, animal husbandry and trade. The word Kiliomodi is complex and comes from a thousand and fashions. Modi was usually a unit of measurement of grains, it was also used as a unit of surface, and indicates a concept of clearly large and indefinite extent.

The village has an Agricultural Clinic with two permanent doctors, KEP, Post Office-Savings Bank, Kindergarten, six-grade Primary School, High School & amp; High School.
To the east there is the famous pine forest of Chiliomodi, whose wonderful forest environment and its healthy climate, has made it known outside the prefecture. A large part of the forest was destroyed in the fires of 2007, and then tree plantings were organized with the participation of many associations and environmental organizations. In recent years the place has become green again and the young trees are growing taller!

The people of the village are hardworking and take care of the progress of the village, while in recent years many associations are active, which have a strong presence and offer important work to society. So the locals have fun with the events of the place, take part in theatrical performances, sing in the Choir, watch the excavation, run on paths in the forest and ancient streets, get passionate with the village group Atromitos, get strength from the monastery , they love its forest and if necessary they extinguish the first fires that threaten it.

It is very interesting to visit this place, to get to know its people first, but also to get to know the places that make it adorable. Our great actress Irini Pappas, the director Manousos Manousakis , the poet Vassilis Rotas come from Chiliomodi.

The visit to the Old Monastery of Faneromeni, in a place like an eagle’s nest, with very easy access to the seven kilometers from the village is wonderful. Every Easter Friday, the popular road Kiliomodi-Paleo Monastery takes place and is held, while on the eve (Easter Thursday) the lighting of the fires on the adjacent ridge and the feast that follows with the roasts and wine are reminiscent of genuine feasts of bygone eras.

The visit to the New Monastery of Faneromeni, and to the adjacent church of Agia Marina, three kilometers from the village, is a special experience of a religious meeting with nuns who are very hospitable and special. The monastery celebrates on the 23rd of August and on the 21st of August there is a procession of the icon and a journey from an old monastery to a new monastery with the participation of many people.

The route, the run and the walk in the forest of Kiliomodi, just 3 km east of the village, is wonderful and refreshing and, if we pass near the camp in the summer, we will hear the laughter & amp; children’s music.

Participating in the uneven road races in the pine forest and mountain running in the ancient roads of our place will be an unforgettable experience. On February 24, 2019, the irregular road race “TRIAL Half Marathon of Faneromeni Kiliomodi” was organized with great success on a wonderful winter route of 6 km and 21 km in the forest and ended the camp where a boiled goat was waiting for them.

This year, the 2nd “TRIAL Faneromeni Kiliomodi Half Marathon” is scheduled for February 23, 2020. In 2019, the 3rd Mycenae-Tenea Mountain Running Race was also organized, starting at the Mycenaean Lions Gate and ending at the Stadium of Xi and in the footsteps of our glorious history.

The visit to the statue of Nikitaras, work of Fanis Sakelariou, to honor the hero for his Battle of Dervenakia and Agionori, just 1000 meters from the village is a tribute to a humble hero of the Revolution of 1821 to whom we owe our Freedom.

Our acquaintance wintroduction to the archaeological research tenea-project will bring us in contact with our distant past but which continues to influence and inspire us. There is no organized archeological site yet.

Our visit to the old fountain of the village, on the edge of the village will remind us of fairy tales and stories of the ancients.

Watching an enjoyable performance from the Kiliomodi Theater Stage, watching the “Polymnia” choir or a dance performance by the local Dance Club will satisfy us completely.

With our walk in the village to see the house of Irini Pappas and Manousos Manousakis, the railway station, the village church, Agios Georgios which on the day of its celebration becomes a popular street with the participation of many villagers, the beautiful schools and the stadium of Kiliomodi, a living space of the village, we will get to know Kiliomodi better.

Participating in the Clean Monday Carnival, reminiscent of the carnivals of earlier times, is a highly relaxing and genuine experience away from foreign habits.

The big festival of Kiliomodi, which takes place on the 22nd and 23rd of August, attracts many visitors and the music and entertainment stops in the morning.

And… if we want to eat or drink our coffee, very easily… with spit delicacies, local delicacies and fine wines of the region. The taverns in Kamareta, in Gemenis, in Chiliomodi or in the surrounding villages, and the souvlaki restaurants in Chiliomodi prepare wonderful delicacies and will satisfy us completely. The cafes, the cafes, in Kiliomodi, living spaces with a warm environment will definitely compensate the visitor.

If, nevertheless, it is very difficult to visit it and see it up close soon… let’s listen at the moment, to the music from the well-known youth band 1000mods, which has started from here and gives concerts all over the world. Then our mental journey will start from Kiliomodi and will reach every corner of this world!

Corinth at this time is, along with Patras and Thebes, one of the most important centers of silk weaving and weaving of silk fabrics. All the activity of these textile workshops is under the vigilant control of imperial officials and many constitute imperial (public) property.

In order to avoid the various barbaric invasions, the Isthmus was built with a strong wall in 546 by Justinian. Nevertheless, it was attacked many times by Slavs, Goths and Arabs.

The latter were exterminated in 883 AD. the admiral of the Byzantine Fleet Ooryfas who transported his entire fleet from the Saronic Gulf to the Corinthian Gulf via Diolkos overnight!

In 1147, however, the city was invaded by the Normans who kidnapped almost all of its weavers and transported them to Sicily.

Since then the city follows a downward course and falls into the hands of the Franks. A glimpse was the Despotate of Leo Sgouros who confronted the Franks and met a heroic death.

In 1395 it will fall to the Despotate of the Peloponnese, but in 1397 it will be sold to the Knights of St. John.

Opposite the Church of the St Paul the Apostle lies a low building, which now houses the Ecclesiastical Museum. This building is an excellent sample of anti-seismic architecture by Professor Per. Paraskevopoulos.

Inside the Ecclesiastical Museum important objects are stored, such as part of the findings from the early Christian Basilica of Agios Leonidos and the seven deacons of the ancient port of Lechaio. You may also take a look at the archive of Ottoman and Greek documents of the most historic Holy Monasteries of Corinth, Panagia Faneromeni and Aghios Georgios Feneos, as well as the old archive of the Holy Monastery of Aghios Dimitrios Stefanios and other documents. These documents have been published with the relevant supervision of Metropolitan Bishop Pandeleimon in a Greek translation from Turkish.

Antimonies of old hierarchs of the Holy Metropolis of Corinth are also included, such as St. Makarios of Notaras, as well as hierarchical vestments.

The collection of the Ecclesiastical Museum is complemented by several Byzantine and Post-Byzantine, mainly, portable icons of great religious, artistic and historical significance, such as the personal icon of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the First Governor of Greece, and part of post-Byzantine masonry frescoes preserved from the 1981 earthquake of the old Church of Perachora. The important exhibits of the Ecclesiastical Museum were recently transferred to a specially designed area of the Krokideio Hall, located in the building complex of the Diocese of the Holy Metropolis of Corinth.
